The Balloon Room by Jayda Karsten

The King Edward School has a very special place in my heart. As a former student and now as an artist I wanted celebrate the school’s 100th Birthday by filling a room with balloons. Among the many things that come to mind when you think of balloons; from fond childhood memories to parties and bright balls of colour, these are all tied to feelings reignited when we encounter this object not to mention hundreds of them.

Another thought is that, like people, balloons occupy space. Although we don’t all occupy the same space at the same time this room is like a time lapse photo of the students that might have stood in this room over the past 100 years. I would like to invite everyone to interact with my piece and experience the sensation or feeling they get when the walk through the room for the first time or maybe once again since they last attended King Edward School.
